Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System

Over the last few years we've really seen the rise of the single cup coffee/espresso centers that run using pods, or cups, or capsules instead of regular coffee beans. I uniformly denounced them when they first came out because I'm an espresso machine snob (but at least I'm man enough to admit it!). But I'll admit, I'm slowly starting to come around.

Tassimo, Keurig, Senseo, and Nespresso have all come out with these types of machines, and now it looks like Cuisinart has thrown it's hat into the ring with the Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System. Is this the single-cup system for you? Let's find out today!

I really like Cuisinart. Generally I stay away from companies that focus on more than one thing. I like to buy my espresso machines from companies that only build espresso machine because I feel that they are more focused on making high quality machines. After all, how can a company that has dozens of product lines keep quality high?

Well, usually that's true...and it's still a good measuring stick to use when evaluating companies; but it doesn't hold true for Cuisinart. Even though they sell a ton of unrelated items like toasters, microwaves, juicers, and espresso machines; their quality is top notch and I'm always very impressed with their machines.

So does that hold true for their entrance into the single-cup world? In a word; yes!

Let's Look At The Machine

Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System

Right off the bat you'll notice that it's a big machine. Most of these single-cup creatures are small. They're just making one cup after all! Really it's just the water tank that makes this guy look so big...and that's a good thing!

The tank is eighty ounces. That's unprecedentedly large and means you won't have to keep refilling it over and over throughout the day. That's a huge benefit.

Pods, Capsules, Cups, Discs?

The ss-700 uses Keurig K-cups. I like that a lot because Keurig has a TON of flavors to choose from. But what's really cool is that this machine has it's own little integrated reusable filter device that lets you fill it with whatever coffee you want; in essence making your own flavored k-cup! That's a HUGE feature and one of the main reasons why I love this machine.

It offers 5 cup sizes so you can get exactly whatever size cup you want at any given time. Many of these machines come with 3 cup sizes, making the ss-700 a stronger candidate right away.

It's also fully programmable with a nice looking blue lit LCD screen that even has a digital clock and auto turn on and turn off features. You can even adjust the temperature control to get just the right hotness for your coffee.

How Does It Compare To The Others?

As far as price goes, it's more expensive than almost all the others except their top of the line models - of which it's about equally priced. The Cuisinart is at the top of the price range because of the LCD programmable features and the HUGE water tank. It's a little more expensive but worth every penny.

What Are Other People Saying?

People really like this machine. At Amazon it has 150 reviews. Ninety-five of them are 5-star and another nineteen are 4 star. After that it has five 3-star, ten 2-star, and twenty-one 1-star giving it an average of four out of five stars. Very nice.

Some of the lower reviews came from people who said the machine was too big for them, others suggested that the coffee was a little weak when using the reusable filter device. Those reviews were definitely in the minority though.

What's The Bottom Line?

If you're in the market for a single-cup machine, then the Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System is a solid choice. You'll spend a little more, but I think you'll be happy with the extra features you get in return. The reusable K-cup filter basket thing is what really wins me over in the end.
