Illy Coffee Capsules

If you're a frequent reader of this website, you know that I'm usually not a huge fan of the coffee pods, or capsules, or cups, or discs. I like coffee beans. I like the smell that wafts through my kitchen when I grind them each morning. What better way to start the day? I get that it's inconvenient and time-consuming for some people though so I've grudgingly accepted them...

The one exception to my unhappiness is Illy Coffee Capsules, and that's really only because I love Illy coffee so much that I don't mind that they've put it in capsule form! If you haven't tried Illy yet, you're really missing out!

Illy Coffee Capsules

These capsules are for use almost exclusively in the FranchisFrancis espresso machines (which are made by Illy - read the reviews in the links at the bottom of the page). In fact, if you have one of those machines, you're pretty much locked into using these capsules.

Unlike some other pod or capsule companies, you don't have a lot of options when it comes to flavor. Usually that would bother me, but not in this case. Why? Because Illy only offers a handful of "flavors" with their beans and trust me - it's enough!.

Basically you're looking at a few choices; including:

  • Medium Roast
  • Dark Roast
  • Lungo Roast
  • Decaf

I've written extensively about the different roasts that Illy offers (see links below) so you can read all about them in greater detail if you like.

Basically, the bottom line is that Medium roast is great for coffee, Dark roast is great for espresso, and decaf is great for the criminally insane (I mean really - why would you drink decaf unless you had some medical condition that doesn't allow you to have caffeine?).

The one interesting thing to point out is the Lungo Roast. This is new, and a little strange. Lungo, I'm guessing, stands for "Long" in Italian (email me and correct me if I'm wrong). It's supposed to be for people who want a "Long" shot of espresso.

What's a long shot? I think it's sort of like a double. It's a regular shot of espresso...just larger. Illy says that it's to be savored in a larger cup. Normally, I just make two shots of espresso and dump them in a larger cup, but apparently this capsule will do that same thing in one go. Hurray.

Let's Talk About Prices

Illy coffee beans, traditionally speaking, are a little more expensive than your average bean but not prohibitively so. You can expect to pay around $15 bucks for an 8.8 ounce can of beans. These capsules are a little more expensive because they have more wrapping materials and whatnot to pay for.

21-count tins of the capsules will usually run you between $19 and $21 depending on where you buy them. We usually have them at the links below for around $16 and if you buy two you can get free shipping. They are 5 ounce cans which makes them more expensive then the regular 8.8 ounce cans of beans.

So What's The Bottom Line?

At the end of the day, you don't really have much of a choice. If you own a FrancisFrancis espresso machine, then you have to use Illy Coffee Capsules. The only real choice you have is where to buy them in order to get the lowest price. Look around the Internet then come back here and buy from me - I think you'll find that we have the lowest prices! After all - Illy is my all time favorite coffee!
