Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

When it comes to a single shot espresso machine, you have a ton of choices out there, and most people tend to go with the cheaper models (even the more expensive cheaper models). The Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine is NOT one of these! This is a near commercial grade espresso maker (some parts in it ARE commercial grade) and it's not for the faint of heart.

For starters, I'd consider this a manual machine, but technically it is a semi-automatic. For all intents and purposes I'm going to call it manual. It certainly has that look and feel to it.

...And now for the scary part...it costs $650. In my opinion though, it's worth every single penny!

Let's Dive Into This Machine

Let's get some of the specs out of the way. First of all, this is a single boiler machine. What sets it apart from virtually all others is brass...that's right; BRASS. It has a brass boiler, a chromed brass brewing head, and brass lines.

Why brass? Because it conducts and distributes heat much more evenly throughout. That's going to lead to better tasting espresso every single time. And we're not talking cheap brass here, the Silvia uses forged marine brass. You just aren't going to see something like that in a similar machine and that's one of the reasons it's so darn expensive.

The Silvia has an iron frame, which means quality. It is housed in stainless steel that looks very snazzy.

Of course, it has a removable water tank (for easy cleaning) that holds up to 2 quarts of water and comes with a nice steam wand so that you can make your own cappuccinos and lattes whenever you want.

There are just so many features that it's hard to discuss them all. For instance, it comes with a cup warmer that's large enough to heat 6 cups at a time. It uses passive heat from the machine itself which is the best way to do it.

It also has a hot water dispenser so that you can use it to make hot chocolate, or tea, or even soup if you want. Lots of other machines have this feature but it never really seems to work right, but you won't have that problem with the Rancilio.

Amazingly enough, the thing has an available E.S.E. pod adapter too! You can use it with all your favorite pods, for all you crazy pod lovers out there. Personally I'll always stick with my coffee beans but that's just me.

What Other People Are Saying

You can look all over the Internet for reviews and it doesn't really matter. People overwhelmingly love this machine. The only complaints that I've really seen are that some people find it a little tricky to use at the beginning simply because there's so much you can do with it, some people take a little longer than others to learn how to use all the features.

I'm not going to break down the actual numbers for reviews like I usually do simply because I don't have to. Everywhere I looked I found consistent 4 out of 5 average reviews. One site had 289 reviews listed, the average was 4.6 when I added them all up. That's just huge.

The Bottom Line

A lot of times, especially in espresso machine world, a high priced machine is high priced simply because the brand is fancy and they can get away with it. Very rarely is something more expensive because it uses much much higher quality parts that cost more money. Those higher costing parts translate into a finer machine that will make extraordinary espresso and last for many years to come when other machines can easily fall apart after a year or so of use.

The Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine may be expensive, but it's a true commercial quality espresso machine that is guaranteed to make superb espresso and last for years to come. It comes with a 2 year warranty and hundreds of satisfied customer reviews. If you can swing the hefty price tag, I highly recommend it.
